(CHICAGO) Today, Kristen Crowell, an advocate for working families and resident of Humbodlt Park, will launch her campaign for the Illinois House of Representatives in the 4th House District.
“Our state is at a crossroads– Bruce Rauner and Donald Trump have done so much damage to our state and our country,” said Crowell. “They don’t care about giving working families the tools they need to build better lives– they only care about helping their rich, corporate donors and friends. I’m running because I want to be a progressive voice for my district so we can work together to build a better future for our families in the wake of the disaster left behind by this failed Governor.”
Kristen brings a solid track record of building and supporting progressive movements in Illinois and the midwest. She began her career as a community organizer in Illinois, fighting to pass in-state tuition for immigrant children. As the founding director of United Working Families, Kristen worked to support the candidacy of Chuy Garcia for Mayor and other progressive aldermanic candidates. She also served as the Executive Director of We Are Wisconsin, the labor and community coalition that led efforts to recall Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker after he attacked union members’ right to collective bargaining.
Crowell has spent the last four years working to pass the Fair Tax as the Campaign Manager of A Better Illinois to modernize Illinois’ outdated and unfair tax code so that lower incomes can be taxed at lower rates and higher incomes can be taxed at higher rates.
In total, Kristen Crowell brings two decades of experience advocating for progressive values including advancing immigrant and worker rights. She has founded multiple organizations committed to training, recruiting and supporting candidates, especially supporting women and candidates of color.
“The 4th District needs a progressive representative with a track record of standing up for immigrants and working families,” said Crowell. “I want to go to Springfield to make sure our neighborhoods are being represented as we push to rebuild what Governor Rauner has broken. I have been a tireless advocate for progressive issues and I will continue to fight until we have fairness in our tax code and the necessary revenue to fund our schools and community resources.”
A campaign kick-off event is scheduled on Tuesday, August 29th at 6PM at the Humboldt Park Boat House. The 4th House District encompasses neighborhoods on the west side of Chicago including portions of Humboldt Park, the Ukrainian Village, West Town, Wicker Park, Logan Square, Hermosa and East Village.
Kristen is married and has five children, including two CPS graduates. She and her family live in Humboldt Park.
